Hundreds of orders leave AKW every day, which is why it is imperative to reduce our usage of single-use plastics in packaging, increase our use of more sustainable materials, and recycle these materials as much as possible.
Several years ago we began re-using cardboard boxes for the dispatch of orders as this is far more sustainable, and we also have a plastic packaging reduction team who regularly review products which contain high levels of plastic in their packaging, and identify opportunities for us to replace this with more sustainable materials.
Key Statistics:
AKW shower trays are packaged using biodegradable cardboard and protected in transit using cardboard edges instead of plastic film.
98% of single-use plastic packaging has been removed from the packaging of AKW shower screens and waste pumps, and has been replaced with replaced with 100% brown paper.
As part of our reducing plastic usage plan, we saved 2333.5kg of polythene bubble wrap by replacing it with biodegradable and recyclable brown paper between 2021 to 2022 – that’s the approximate weight of 2 Mini Coopers!
Product Packaging Projects:
Onyx Exclusif Shower Trays – We removed all polythene from the packaging of these shower trays, saving 1,809.41kg of plastic from stock received in 2023.
Shower Screens – Bubble wrap was formerly used to protect our shower screens while in transit, however this has now been replaced with cardboard. In 2021 we used 366 rolls (2379kg) of bubble wrap, but in 2022 drastically reduced this to just 7 rolls, preventing 2333.5kg worth of plastic going to waste.
4000 Series Shower Seats – We are now in the process of removing polythene from the packaging of our 4000 Series Shower Seats, with each unit using 0.06kg of polythene. We estimate we can reduce this by 477.72kg each year.
